Card Skimming at the Pump – Worldwide concern

Some retailers mistakenly view forecourt security as a compliance issue only, and only consider the minimum security requirements outlined by the Payment Card Industry. However, thieves have continued to adapt their methods of stealing card data, and credit card skimming has become an increasing problem for fueling retailers across the country and now the world. In the hypercompetitive market of fuel retailing, recent skimming attacks in California, Florida, Arizona, and Colorado have cost retailers brand loyalty in their communities by compromising customer card data to thieves. In their security best practices statement, PCATS recommends a number of passive physical security best practices, but also recommends the active approach of employing card readers that encrypt card data at the point of swipe and proactively detect tampering to prevent fraud.
